Biography
Yuta Tamura
Born in Hyogo, Japan. Based in Kobe.
Yuta Tamura is a contemporary artist whose practice crosses multiple forms of expression, including two-dimensional works, semi-relief works, and installations. Throughout his career, he has explored diverse forms of expression, including pixel-based character works, abstract paintings, and paintings featuring plants as motifs. Currently, he primarily creates works using materials such as plants, soil, rope, and fabric.
Throughout Tamura’s practice, there has been a consistent attention toward the relationship between materials and existence, despite shifts in methods and media. Rather than treating materials as mere means of production, he engages with their inherent qualities and the passage of time, exploring how we might relate to things that are continuously changing.
Through diverse media and materials, Tamura’s works do not simply present fixed forms or completed states. Instead, they open up multiple ways of being through the transformations of materials and their relationships with viewers and the places in which they are exhibited.
田村 勇太｜Yuta Tamura
兵庫県生まれ。神戸市を拠点に活動。
田村勇太は、平面、半立体、インスタレーションなど複数の表現媒体を横断しながら制作を行う現代美術家である。これまで、ピクセル表現を用いたキャラクター作品や抽象絵画、植物をモチーフとした絵画作品など、多様な表現を展開してきた。現在は、植物や土、縄、布などの素材を用いた作品を中心に制作している。
田村の制作には、表現方法や素材が変化していく中でも一貫して、物質や存在との関係を見つめる姿勢がある。素材を単なる制作の手段として扱うのではなく、それぞれが持つ性質や時間の経過を受け入れながら、変化していくものとどのように関わることができるのかを探っている。
異なる媒体や素材を通して展開される作品は、固定された形態や完成された状態のみを提示するのではなく、素材の変化や鑑賞者、展示される場所との関係の中で、多様なあり方をひらいていく。
Artist Statement
I believe that all that exists is in a constant state of change and can never remain eternal. Matter, life, the body, and memory exist within the world, continuously transforming through time. What is important to me is recognizing the connections that remain within what is constantly changing.
From this perspective, I create works using materials such as plants, soil, rope, and fabric—materials that are inherently subject to change over time. These materials are not used to preserve a completed form, but are placed within the work as beings that do not resist change. A work is not a fixed object, but something that continually shifts into different states through its relationship with viewers, places, and time. This transformation is also part of the work, and through this process I observe the ways in which beings continue while changing.
For me, change is not an end in itself. Change is a condition through which beings continue into new relationships. Because things change, they can connect with other forms of being, and through this continuity, time emerges. I view phenomena that may appear to be opposites—such as memory and forgetting, emergence and disappearance, life and death—as processes in which beings continue to transform while containing one another.
A work opens this way of seeing the world through its relationship with viewers and places. By resonating with each person’s own experiences and memories, I hope that my works become an opportunity to look again at familiar beings and everyday surroundings through a slightly different perspective.
私は、あらゆる存在は変化し続け、永遠ではありえないと考えている。物質や生命、身体、記憶は、世界の中にある存在として、時間のなかで姿を変え続けている。私にとって重要なのは、移ろいゆく存在のなかに、それでもなお途切れることのないつながりを見出すことである。
このような世界の見方から、私は植物や土、縄、布など、時間とともに変化しやすい素材を用いて制作を行っている。これらの素材は、完成された形態を保存するためではなく、変化を拒まない存在として作品のなかに置かれる。作品は固定された物体ではなく、鑑賞者や場所、時間との関係によって絶えず異なる状態へと移り変わる。その変化もまた作品の一部であり、私はその過程を通して、変化しながら続いていく存在のあり方を見つめている。
私にとって変化は目的ではない。変化は、存在が次の関係のなかに続いていくための条件である。存在は変化するからこそ別の存在へとつながり、その連なりのなかで時間は立ち現れる。私は、記憶と忘却、生成と消失、生と死といった、相反するように見える現象を、互いに含み合いながら姿を変え続ける存在の過程として見つめている。
作品は、こうした世界の見方を鑑賞者や場所との関係のなかでひらいていく。作品がそれぞれの経験や記憶と響き合うことで、身近な存在や日常の風景をこれまでとは少し異なる眼差しで見つめ直す契機となることを願っている。
